RACE DISPARITIES IN BREAST CANCER TREATMENT AND ADVERSE EFFECTS AMONG NON-HISPANIC WOMEN: A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS

PUBLIC HEALTH

A comprehensive analysis of the treatment patterns and treatment-related adverse events in non-Hispanic women with breast cancer was published in Nature's Sci-Rep Journal. The study, which followed 17,454 patients for 17 years, found that non-Hispanic black women were less likely than non-Hispanic white women to undergo curative surgery or receive endocrine therapy, and had a higher risk of cognitive decline/dementia after  treatment.

This study highlights the urgent need for public policy measures to equalize access to quality healthcare to improve cancer outcomes in marginalized communities.

FDA APPROVES TRODELVY FOR HR+/HER2- METASTATIC BREAST CANCER

BREAST CANCER

The FDA has approved sacituzumab govitecan-hziy(Trodelvy) for the treatment of advanced breast cancer in patients who have received endocrine-based therapy and at least two other systemic therapies. The approval was based on data from the Phase 3 TROPiCS-02 study, which demonstrated significant improvements in overall and progression-free survival compared to standard chemotherapy.

The approval provides a new treatment option for patients who have developed resistance to endocrine-based therapies and have progressed on available chemotherapies.

AI DERMALYSER DEVICE SHOWS PROMISING RESULTS IN DIAGNOSIS

MELANOMA

The Dermlyser device is a decision support system forassessing potential melanoma. It outperformed primary care physicians and dermatologists in diagnosingmelanoma in a prospective study conducted in primary care settings. The device demonstrated 95% sensitivity and 86% specificity in detecting melanoma in patients with cutaneous lesions. The device is expected to be launched in Europe by the end of 2023.

This device has the potential to optimize efficiencies within the healthcare system and enable earlier disease detection to ensure improved treatment outcomes.

FDA APPROVES DOSTARLIMAB FOR DMMR RECURRENT/ADVANCED ENDOMETRIAL CANCER

ENDOMETRIAL CANCER

The FDA has approved dostarlimab (Jemperli) for the treatment of patients with mismatch repair deficient(dMMR) recurrent or advanced endometrial cancer who have previously progressed on platinum-containingregimens and are not candidates for curative surgery orradiation. The approval was based on findings from the Phase 1 GARNET trial, interim results of which were published  published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology in 2022.

This approval paves the way for further dMMR approvals to reduce t reatment burden and potentially increase biomarker testing standards.

PERSONALIZED MRNA VACCINE GRANTED BREAKTHROUGH THERAPY DESIGNATION FOR HIGH-RISK MELANOMA

MELANOMA

Moderna has reported that the FDA has granted a breakthrough therapy designation to its mRNA vaccine(mRNA-4157/V940) based on data from the Phase 2b KEYNOTE-942 trial. The trial showed that the addition of an mRNA vaccine to adjuvant pembrolizumab improved recurrence-free survival following resection of high-risk melanoma.

Non-traditional preventative and diagnostic choices continue to advance, as evidenced by novel AI and mRNA vaccine melanoma options.
